We were delighted to support local personal trainer, Peter Abbott, who ran the London Marathon in aid of the Willow Foundation (www.willowfoundation.org.uk), a charity dedicated to providing special days out for seriously ill young adults. Wonderful effort, Pete!
AGE UK (RICHMOND UPON THAMES)
Age UK (www.ageuk.org.uk) is the UK’s largest charity specialising in the welfare of our older generations. It serves to provide advice, combat loneliness and empower those in later life. We were so pleased to be able to make a contribution to their wonderful work within Richmond-upon-Thames, and to get to know some of their staff and to better understand the work they do within our communities.
Trinity Hospice (www.trinityhospice.org.uk) provides skilled, compassionate end of life care to those in need in central and south-west London, as well as support to their families. Some of those assisted have cancer, while others have long term conditions such as heart failure, or lung or neurological conditions. Services include nursing and medical care, emotional and practical support, welfare advice, occupational and physiotherapy, complementary therapies, spiritual care and creative activities. The majority of care takes place in peoples own homes, and having witnessed this support at first hand it meant a great to be able to contribute to the work of Trinity Hospice.
Like many, we had never heard of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) before it was brought to our attention by a Barnes resident. CMV is a common virus that can infect people of all ages, and is one of the main causes of children being born with permanent disabilities. We were pleased to make a small contribution to the work of CMV ACTION (www.cmvaction.org.uk), who promote awareness of the virus (most healthy adults and children will have no signs, symptoms or long-term effects), vaccination against and ultimately the eradication of CMV.
